Roofing costs answer

What do roofers charge per day?

A day rate sounds simple, but it hides the things that really decide what a roof costs.

The short answer

There is no sound day rate to quote, because a roof is priced as a whole job and not by the day. Labour is one part of a price that also depends on access, the covering, the area and what the survey finds. For Andover, the figure that matters is the written total after a survey. Typical UK ranges for common jobs are linked below.

Why a day rate does not answer the question

Ask a roofer for a day rate and you may get a number, but it tells you very little. Two crews working for one day can achieve very different amounts.

The rate also depends on what it includes. A crew of one or of three, a labourer for the waste, a scaffold or tower, a van, tools, materials and the owner's time for the survey and the paperwork are all in or out depending on who is speaking.

So a day rate cannot be compared between firms. A figure of a given amount from one firm and a different amount from another could be describing completely different things.

The better question is how much the whole job will cost, and what it covers. Roofers price in that way because it is the only number that has meaning for you, and because a fixed price for a defined job protects both sides.

If a firm insists on charging by the day, ask for a limit in writing and an estimate of the days involved, so that the job cannot run away.

What actually drives labour cost

Start with access. A low roof reached from a ladder is quick to work. A tall house needs a scaffold, and building and taking it down takes time. A roof behind other buildings, or one that must be reached through a narrow passage, slows everything.

Next is the covering. Natural slate, clay and concrete tiles all go on differently. Slates need nails and careful setting out, plain tiles are small and numerous, and a flat roof membrane needs dry weather and a clean deck. Lead needs a different skill again.

The area and the complexity follow. Dormers, valleys, hips, chimneys, rooflights and abutments all take longer than a plain slope, and each adds a point where water can enter.

Then comes what the survey finds. Rotten battens, failed underlay or damaged rafters add work that cannot be seen from the ground. That is why a price before a survey is a guess.

Waste matters too, and so does the weather, because a roof stripped in a wet week costs more to protect. Old tiles, battens and rubbish have to be lowered, loaded and taken away, and the bin, the labour and the disposal are all part of the job.

The written quote fixes the total once these are known, and it should say so plainly.

Typical UK ranges you can check

Published cost guides price whole jobs, not days of a roofer's time. Which? (Nov 2025) gives a typical UK range of £75 to £400 to fix a handful of broken tiles, between one and six, and £80 to £300 for a new ridge tile. Which? figures are ex VAT: they come from a survey of 11 traders, gathered in November 2025, and include labour and materials.

MyJobQuote (Oct 2026) reckons a typical roof repair comes to around £650 in 2026. That figure is spread across many kinds of repair, and your own roof could sit well above or below it.

These guides are useful for orientation, and they cannot say what a firm in Andover will charge, because none of them has seen your roof. For larger work, see our guides to roof repair cost and new roof cost, which set out the published ranges with their sources and dates.

Our own figure comes after the roof has been looked at. If a figure in a guide is much lower than a quote, ask what the quote includes before assuming the quote is wrong.

The guides are a way to check that a total is in the right area, nothing more.

What a roofer will charge for an Andover job

It depends on the roof, and a survey is how you find out. For an Andover address, we look at the roof, photograph what is there, explain what the survey shows and send you a single written total price. That price covers the job as agreed, with nothing added at the end.

What you can do beforehand is compare like with like. Citizens Advice advises getting written quotes from at least 3 traders, and our answer on how many roofing quotes to get explains how to check that each firm has priced the same work.

Ask whether the figure carries VAT, scaffold and waste removal. Our answer on VAT on roofing work covers the rate.

Be sceptical of anyone who names a firm figure by phone before the roof has been seen, and of anyone who offers a big discount for deciding at once.

The homepage shows how the process works, from first photographs to the final price.

Pricing a roofer's time

Is a day rate cheaper than a fixed price?

Not necessarily. A day rate leaves the number of days open, so the final bill can grow if the weather turns or the roof hides surprises. A fixed written price for a defined job gives both sides a limit. If a firm works by the day, ask for an estimate of the days and a ceiling in writing.

Why will no roofer quote me by phone?

Because the roof has not been seen. Access, covering, area and hidden damage all change the figure. A survey with photographs lets the firm quote one total for the work, and any price given earlier is only a guess that may be corrected on arrival.
